Setting and achieving goals can often seem like a huge feat. It's just so hard to reach and we lose motivation.

Have you ever felt that way?

Here’s the thing. There are some common mistakes when we set goals that stop us from achieving them.

We often set goals too high or that have too long a time until we can reach them.

This is probably number one.

Setting big lofty life goals and business goals, ones we’re told are “big scary goals.” I bet you have set some and thought “This doesn’t feel attainable,” just to have a coach tell you “You’re the only thing standing in your way,” “Don’t limit yourself” or “If you work hard enough you can achieve anything.

And I understand that those are supposed to be motivating and for some people they are. But for a lot of people (maybe you?) they are really not motivating.

Setting goals that will take you 10 years to achieve just doesn’t give you the dopamine hit you need to be motivated to keep going.

So it’s better to either set a series of smaller goals that we can achieve quicker and use to motivate us to achieve the next goal or if we are going to set the big lofty goal have a series of smaller actions that we can put a check in the box in along the way.

But here is something that most people don’t do or don’t realize they can do (tell me if this applies to you?), you can celebrate progress before you actually reach your goal.

Another great way to keep up your motivation. You don’t have to wait until the goal is fully achieved to be able to celebrate it.

Here are my 3 best tips for celebrating how far you’ve come with your life goals:

1. When you set your goal record different milestones/actions that it’ll take to reach your overall goal

Then celebrate each time you reach one of those milestones!

This builds momentum, keeps you focused and on track and gives you something concrete to celebrate as you go. Doing this stops you from being unsure about what to even celebrate as you’re chasing goals.

2. Set aside time each month to evaluate and do a progress check

Decide early on when each month you’re going to do this. Will it be the beginning of the month, the end of the month, a mid-month check-in, etc.?

But keep this commitment to yourself because it could be just the thing that keeps you motivated to push forward.

3. Find a buddy or a tool that helps you along the way

An accountability buddy, a membership, a support group, a program, whatever you need to keep your motivation up and keep you excited about chasing your dreams.

Having someone who you can bounce ideas back and forth with or who can give you a pick-me-up when you’re just not feeling it can be incredibly valuable.
